This book is a new level of dark and triggering for me. The characters were well-developed although the conflict between them that happened years earlier was pretty vague and could use a little fleshing out. This would have helped develop the relationship more between Penny and Ryder and his hatred for her. There were several times during this novel, I didn't think we were going to have a happily ever after, but to my relief we did. There were also several times, I thought the author was going to use senseless violence for the shock factor, but they pulled back right in time and turned the situation around, which involved a shocking surprise.
The writing was a little hard to follow at times. I'd have to go back and re-read several paragraphs because of variations in past/present tense or wrong word usage which made the writing unclear in places.
I'm not sure if this was a stand-alone or part of a series, but I would be interested in reading more from this author.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
